Chapter 42

Chapter 42 begins with a famine in the land of Canaan, causing Jacob’s sons—except Benjamin—to go to Egypt to buy food. At last, Joseph, who has become the governor of Egypt after long years of suffering, meets his brothers again after about 20 years. The story, which had centered on Joseph, now begins to focus more on Jacob’s family. While the whole world suffers from famine, Jacob’s family in Canaan also comes to Egypt to buy grain (verses 1–5). Although Joseph recognizes his brothers, they do not recognize him. Joseph tests his brothers (verses 6–25). After returning to Canaan, the brothers report everything to Jacob. When they discover bundles of money still in their sacks, they become afraid (verses 26–38). Thus, chapter 42 shows that the plan for Jacob’s family to move to Egypt is gradually being fulfilled.

Q1) When famine struck Canaan, what did Jacob ask his sons to do (verses 1–2)?

Q2) How did Jacob and his sons react when they found the money in their sacks (verses 28, 35)?

Q3) What complaint did Jacob make to his sons (verse 36)?

Chapter 43

In chapter 43, as the famine becomes more severe and the food from Egypt runs out, the brothers urgently plead with Jacob. Judah promises to take full responsibility, even with his life, and the brothers finally return to Egypt with Benjamin to buy food (verses 1–13). Joseph is glad to see them again and welcomes them. When he sees Benjamin, his only full brother, he is deeply moved and weeps privately (verses 14–30). After regaining his composure, Joseph seats his brothers in order of their ages. They are amazed, but still do not recognize him (verses 31–34).

Q1) How did Jacob respond when told that Benjamin must go to Egypt (verse 6)?

Q2) What prayer did Jacob offer when sending Benjamin (verse 14)?

Q3) What did the brothers notice while sitting to eat (verses 33–34)?

Chapter 44

Chapter 44 continues with Joseph’s final test to resolve the emotions built up over the past twenty years with his brothers. He has their sacks filled with money again, and secretly places a silver cup in Benjamin’s sack. Then he accuses them of theft and attempts to detain Benjamin (verses 1–17). At this point, Judah steps forward and offers himself as a slave in place of Benjamin, explaining the great sorrow their father would experience if Benjamin did not return (verses 18–34).

Q1) What did the brothers do when the silver cup was found in Benjamin’s sack (verse 13)?

Q2) Why did Judah say they could not leave Benjamin behind (verses 19–22)?

Q3) What did Judah propose to Joseph in order to send Benjamin back to his father (verses 32–34)?
