Genesis 8-10

Rese@rcher 2026. 2. 5. 16:34

Chapter 8

Chapter 8 describes how God’s judgment through water comes to an end and how the earth is gradually restored to its normal condition. The saved group led by Noah begins to rebuild their relationship with God in a new world.

As the waters steadily recede, Noah’s ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat (verses 1–5). To determine whether the waters had fully subsided, Noah sends out a raven and then a dove (verses 6–14).

Eventually, the waters completely dry up, and Noah, his family, and all the living creatures come out into the new world (verses 15–19). When Noah builds an altar to the Lord, God establishes a covenant, promising never again to destroy the earth by a flood (verses 20–22).

Q1) After the flood ended, what did the dove bring back to Noah (verse 11)?

Q2) What was the first thing Noah did after coming out of the ark (verse 20)?

Q3) What did God declare after accepting Noah’s offering (verses 21–22)?

Chapter 9

Chapter 9 records how God blesses Noah and his descendants after they come out of the ark, commanding them to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth (verses 1–7). God also establishes regulations regarding what humans may and may not eat, blesses Noah and his sons, and promises never again to destroy all humanity with a flood. As the sign of this covenant, God places the rainbow in the clouds (verses 8–19).

Meanwhile, Noah plants a vineyard and becomes drunk from the wine made from its fruit, exposing himself inappropriately (verses 20–21). Based on the responses of his three sons to this incident, Noah pronounces blessings and curses upon each of them (verses 22–29).

Q1) What words did God repeatedly speak when blessing Noah and his sons (verses 1–3, 7)?

Q2) How did Noah’s three sons respond to his mistake after he became drunk from the fruit of the vineyard (verses 22–23)?

Q3) Which son was cursed because of his response to Noah’s drunkenness, and what was the curse (verses 22, 25)?

Chapter 10

Chapter 10 focuses on the descendants of Noah’s three sons, revealing the origins of the nations. The true purpose of this genealogy is to show how the line of Shem becomes distinct from the lines of his brothers.

Just as God blessed Noah’s three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—to be fruitful and multiply after the flood, their descendants spread out and inhabited the whole earth (see Acts 17:26).

The chapter first records the descendants of Japheth (verses 1–5), then the descendants of Ham, who was cursed after mocking his drunken father (verses 6–20). Among Ham’s descendants are the Canaanites, who would later become enemies of the Israelites.

Finally, the descendants of Shem are introduced (verses 21–32). From this line come Abraham and the people of Israel, the heirs of God’s covenant.

Q1) Who were the representative descendants of Canaan, the son of Ham (verses 15–18)?

Q2) What were the territorial boundaries of the descendants of Canaan (verses 19–20)?
