South Africa’s youth demographic has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past three decades, with Black African youth surging while other racial groups decline.
According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), the proportion of Black African youth (aged 15–34) rose significantly from 78.7% in 1996 to 85.5% in 2022, reflecting sustained growth in both absolute numbers and relative share.
In contrast, the shares of all other racial groups shrank. The most pronounced decline was among White youth, whose proportion was nearly halved from 9.5% to 4.5%. Meanwhile, the share of Coloured youth decreased by 1.4 percentage points, and Indian/Asian youth dipped by 0.3 percentage points.
Experts note that this shifting landscape will profoundly impact South Africa's future labor market and socioeconomic policies.
In terms of the working-age population (15–64 years), the youth segment constitutes a whopping 50.2%, representing more than half of this group.
