Genesis 19-20

Rese@rcher 2026. 2. 9. 15:50

Chapter 19

Chapter 19 clearly reveals God’s justice, as He executes thorough judgment against sin through the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. It describes the extreme wickedness of these cities, which turned away from God and pursued only pleasure (verses 1–14). At the same time, the chapter records God’s love and grace in saving Lot and his family even in the midst of severe judgment (verses 15–23).

Lot’s wife, unable to let go of worldly possessions and pleasures, disobeys the command not to look back. She turns around and becomes a pillar of salt (verses 24–29).

Finally, through the incestuous actions of Lot and his two daughters, the tragic consequences of Lot’s worldly choice (Genesis 13:11) are revealed (verses 30–38).

Q1) How did the angels act to ensure Lot’s safety (verses 15–17; 21–22)?

Q2) What events took place as Lot entered Zoar (verses 23–26)?

Q3) Which nations were born as a result of the actions of Lot’s two daughters (verses 37–38)?

Chapter 20

Chapter 20 shows Abraham repeating the same lie he had told before—claiming that Sarah was his sister—this time in Gerar. Abraham does this again to protect his own life, placing Sarah in danger of being taken by King Abimelech. However, God intervenes and rescues Abraham and Sarah from this crisis (verses 1–7).

Although Abimelech rebukes Abraham for deceiving him, Abraham ultimately receives even greater blessings through God’s grace (verses 8–18).

Q1) What did God do when King Abimelech of Gerar intended to take Sarah as his wife (verse 3; verses 6–7)?

Q2) What blessing did Abraham receive after Abimelech treated him generously (verses 16–17)?
