Chapter 24
Chapter 24 describes the process by which Isaac, the heir of the covenant, is married. After the death of his wife Sarah, Abraham hastens to arrange Isaac’s marriage. Two important principles guide this process: Isaac’s wife must be chosen from among Abraham’s relatives, and Isaac must not be taken back to Haran.
Abraham sends his faithful and trusted elderly servant to his distant homeland to find a wife for Isaac (verses 1–9). The servant prays to God for guidance concerning Isaac’s future wife, and God answers his prayer by leading him to Rebekahin a divinely prepared way. The servant then receives consent for the marriage from Rebekah and her family (verses 10–60).
Finally, Rebekah journeys to Canaan and meets Isaac, and the two are joined together as husband and wife (verses 61–67).
Q1) What does Abraham’s servant pray for in order to find a wife for Isaac (verses 12–14)?
Q2) How does Laban welcome Abraham’s servant (verses 31–33)?
Q3) After receiving permission for Rebekah to become Isaac’s wife, how long does the servant remain there (verses 54–56)?
Chapter 25
Chapter 25 marks the conclusion of the life of Abraham, the father of faith, whose story began in Chapter 12. It then moves forward from the death of the first patriarch to the birth of Jacob, the third patriarch of Israel, and the account of how he acquires the birthright.
The chapter records:
- Abraham’s descendants through his later wife Keturah (verses 1–6),
- The descendants born through Hagar (verses 12–18),
- The birth of Isaac’s two sons, Esau and Jacob, revealing God’s sovereign choice (verses 19–26).
It concludes with the event in which Esau despises his birthright and sells it to Jacob (verses 27–34).
Q1) How does Abraham distribute his possessions between Isaac and his other sons (verses 5–6)?
Q2) When Rebekah is unable to conceive after marriage, what does Isaac do (verse 21)?
Q3) How does Esau respond to Jacob’s demand to sell the birthright (verses 31–33)?
