Chapter 34

Chapter 34 records the tragic incident involving Dinah, the daughter of Jacob. Dinah goes out to visit the women of the land, but she is violated by Shechem, the leader of the region. Afterward, Shechem seeks to marry her and approaches Jacob with a proposal (verses 1–12).

Jacob’s sons respond deceitfully, demanding circumcision as a condition for marriage. While the men of Shechem are still in pain from circumcision, Simeon and Levi attack the city, killing all the males and plundering it mercilessly (verses 13–29). As a result, Jacob rebukes his sons for bringing danger upon the family (verses 30–31).

Although this chapter outwardly depicts conflict between Jacob’s family and the Canaanites, it more deeply reveals Jacob’s delayed obedience to his vow at Bethel.

Q1) For what purpose did Dinah go out (verse 1)?

Q2) What did Jacob’s sons demand as a condition for allowing marriage with Dinah (verse 15)?

Q3) What violent actions did Simeon and Levi commit (verses 25–29)?

Chapter 35

Chapter 35 brings the major portion of Jacob’s life story—which began in Chapter 27—to its conclusion. After enduring many trials, Jacob grows into spiritual maturity and fully returns to God. His entire household is restored in faith.

Fearing retaliation from the surrounding Canaanites after the massacre at Shechem, Jacob is commanded by God to go immediately to Bethel. Jacob responds by removing foreign gods from his household, purifying his family, and building an altar at Bethel (verses 1–8). This marks Jacob’s restoration as the rightful heir of the covenant.

God then reaffirms to Jacob the blessings originally given to Abraham and Isaac (verses 9–15). The chapter also records the death of Rachel and Isaac and lists Jacob’s twelve sons, signaling the passing of one generation and the rise of the next (verses 16–29).

Q1) What command does God give Jacob in his time of crisis, and how does Jacob respond (verses 1–5)?

Q2) How does Jacob change the name of Rachel’s son, and what is its meaning (verse 18)?

Chapter 36

Chapter 36 provides a detailed genealogy of Esau, the firstborn son of Isaac and Rebekah. After settling in the land of Seir, Esau’s descendants grow into a strong nation (verses 1–19). The chapter also records the lineage of the Horites, the original inhabitants of Mount Seir (verses 20–30), and lists the kings who ruled Edom before any king ruled in Israel (verses 31–43).

By including the genealogy of a foreign nation, this chapter reveals that God’s redemptive plan ultimately extends beyond Israel to all humanity.

Q1) Which people were the original inhabitants of Mount Seir where Esau’s descendants settled (verses 20–21)?

Q2) From which people did Esau’s wife Oholibamah come (verses 20, 25)?

Q3) Who is identified as the ancestor of the Edomites (verse 43)?
