Genesis 28-30

Chapter 28

Beginning with Chapter 28, Jacob’s long journey as a wanderer begins. Isaac commands Jacob to go to Paddan-aram, the home of his mother’s family, to find a wife, and he blesses him before sending him away (verses 1–5).

Meanwhile, Esau attempts to gain his parents’ approval by marrying a daughter of Ishmael, who belongs to Abraham’s lineage (verses 6–9).

On his way to Haran, Jacob encounters God at Bethel. Through a dream, God reaffirms the covenantal blessings that were given to Abraham and Isaac and now extends them to Jacob (verses 10–22). In response, Jacob makes a vow to God concerning worship and the offering of a tithe. This event serves as a crucial confirmation that Jacob has inherited the legitimacy of the covenant.

Q1) What words does God speak to Jacob as he flees toward Haran to escape Esau’s threat (verses 12–14)?

Q2) After encountering God in a dream while leaving his homeland, what vow does Jacob make to God (verses 20–22)?

Chapter 29

From Chapter 29 onward, Jacob’s life in exile shows how God faithfully keeps the covenant He promised at Bethel and blesses Jacob abundantly. Under God’s guidance, Jacob meets his uncle Laban in Haran (verses 1–14).

Jacob falls in love with Laban’s daughter Rachel, but due to Laban’s deceitful plan to keep Jacob working longer, Jacob is first married to Leah. After enduring further waiting and labor, Jacob also marries Rachel (verses 15–30).

Although conflict arises in Jacob’s household because of having two wives, God uses even this situation to bring about His purpose, granting Jacob sons who will become the ancestors of the twelve tribes of Israel (verses 31–35).

Q1) Where are the people Jacob meets at the well from (verse 4)?

Q2) What does Jacob ask Laban for as his wages (verses 15, 18)?

Q3) What are the names and meanings of the four sons born to Leah (verses 32–35)?

Chapter 30

Chapter 30 records the intensifying competition between Rachel and Leah as they strive to bear more children for Jacob. Out of jealousy, both sisters even give their maidservants to Jacob in order to have children through them. This chapter reveals both the family strife caused by favoritism and God’s providence, as He uses these flawed circumstances to multiply the covenant family (verses 1–24).

Afterward, Jacob makes an agreement with Laban regarding his wages. Through various means, Jacob increases his livestock and wealth (verses 25–43). This prosperity demonstrates that Jacob’s blessings—both his descendants and his possessions—have a divine origin rooted in God’s covenant, and it prepares the way for his eventual return to the promised land.

Q1) What complaint does Rachel make to Jacob (verse 1)?

Q2) What does Jacob request from his uncle Laban (verses 25–26)?

Q3) How does Laban respond to Jacob’s request (verses 27–28)?
