Chapter 31

In Chapter 31, as Jacob’s wealth continues to increase, Laban grows jealous, leading to serious conflict between them. After spending more than twenty years in his uncle Laban’s household, Jacob prepares to return to his homeland in obedience to God’s will. This return fulfills the vow Jacob made in Genesis 28:21.

Conflict arises over possessions, and through this situation, God instructs Jacob to return to his homeland (verses 1–16). Jacob secretly gathers his family and leaves Haran without Laban’s knowledge (verses 17–21). Laban pursues Jacob, but God protects Jacob and prevents Laban from harming him (verses 22–42).

Eventually, Laban and Jacob establish a peace covenant at Mizpah, agreeing not to cross boundaries to harm one another (verses 43–55).

Q1) What does Jacob say is the reason for his prosperity (verses 7–9)?

Q2) How does God protect Jacob from Laban’s pursuit (verses 24, 29)?

Q3) What do the stone heap called Galeed and Mizpah signify (verses 48–49)?

Chapter 32

Chapter 32 records the many challenges Jacob faces on his journey back to Canaan after reconciling with Laban. Jacob fears meeting his brother Esau, from whom he once took the birthright and blessing.

God’s angels appear to Jacob, showing that God is with him (verses 1–2). Even so, Jacob remains afraid after hearing that Esau is approaching with four hundred men (verses 3–21). To appease Esau, Jacob prepares gifts and relies on human strategies.

That night, at the Jabbok River, Jacob wrestles with a divine being in prayer. Though his hip is injured and he limps, Jacob receives God’s blessing after enduring the struggle (verses 22–32).

Q1) What message do the messengers bring back to Jacob about Esau (verses 3, 6)?

Q2) What gifts does Jacob prepare for Esau, and how does he arrange the people and animals (verses 13–16, first half of verse 19)?

Q3) What blessing does Jacob receive from the one who wrestles with him until daybreak (verses 26–28)?

Chapter 33

Chapter 33 describes the reconciliation between Jacob and Esau. After wrestling through the night and receiving God’s blessing, Jacob experiences a great deliverance. God, who had transformed Jacob’s character through suffering, also changes Esau’s heart.

When the brothers meet, Esau embraces Jacob, forgives him, and they are reconciled in love (verses 1–11). Esau invites Jacob to live together, but Jacob declines and instead settles in Succoth (verses 12–17). This decision symbolically reflects the distinction between the children of God and the ways of the world.

Jacob later purchases land near Shechem and builds an altar to God (verses 18–20).

Q1) How does Esau respond when he meets his brother Jacob after twenty years (verse 4)?

Q2) What does Jacob do when he arrives at Succoth (verse 17)?
