Genesis 26-27

Rese@rcher 2026. 2. 12. 14:58

Chapter 26

In Chapter 26, Isaac moves to Gerar because of a famine in Canaan. While living there, he deceives others by saying that Rebekah is his sister in order to protect his own life. Nevertheless, God preserves Isaac and continues to bless him (verses 1–16).

Conflict arises between Isaac and the people of Gerar over the ownership of wells. Despite repeated disputes and the loss of wells, Isaac continues to move forward and dig new ones. In response, God rewards his perseverance, and these conflicts eventually lead to a peace treaty and alliance. Through this process, Isaac lawfully secures his place in the land of the covenant (verses 17–33).

However, the chapter concludes on a sorrowful note as Esau marries foreign women, bringing grief to the hearts of Isaac and Rebekah (verses 34–35).

Q1) What happens to Isaac after he goes to Gerar because of the famine in Canaan (verses 6–10)?

Q2) What kinds of crises does Isaac face in the land of the Philistines (verses 12–16) and in the Valley of Gerar (verses 17–22)?

Q3) How do Isaac and Rebekah respond to their son Esau’s marriages to Hittite women (verses 34–35)?

Chapter 27

Beginning with Chapter 27, the narrative focuses fully on the life of Jacob. Believing that his death is near, Isaac intends to bless his firstborn son Esau, whom he loves, and to pass on the birthright to him (verses 1–4).

However, with the help of his mother Rebekah, Jacob takes advantage of Isaac’s old age and failing eyesight. By deceiving his father, Jacob receives the blessing that was intended for Esau (verses 5–29). The chapter records Esau’s grief and anger after losing the blessing, as well as Isaac’s prophetic words concerning Esau’s future (verses 30–40).

Fearing that Esau will kill Jacob, Rebekah helps Jacob escape to Paddan-aram, marking the beginning of Jacob’s journey away from home (verses 41–46).

Q1) Why does Isaac mistake Jacob for Esau and give him the blessing (verses 21–27a)?

Q2) What does Esau tearfully ask of his father Isaac, and what does he receive as a result (verses 31, 34, 37–40)?

Q3) In the face of a family crisis involving the threat of murder, what course of action does Rebekah choose (verses 42–45)?
